LAKES, FOREST, ICE AND A SUMMIT

Northern Ice Field

Northern Ice Field

Hiking through forests, crossing the Lake Leones by boat and climbing up to the ice shelf. This expedition is aimed at people that want to hike around the almost unexplored patagonian region of Aysén. Forests, rivers, lakes, ice fields, huemules and a lot of wind characterise one of the most beautiful spots in Chile.

The ice field expedition in this remote area of Chile has all the hallmarks of a trip full of adventure. From Coyhaique we will travel along the impressive Carretera Austral to Puerto Gaudal, the small town in which we will spend the night before continuing on to Puerto Tranquilo.

From this point we will start a walk of 9 kilometres along a woody path to the Lake Leones. Here we will take a motorboat to cross to the east shore of the lake to set up our base camp – a trip of around 45 minutes.

The trip to the ice shelf starts from the base camp. Should the weather allow for it, we will do a hike and then do a simple climb of a mountain on the very ice shelf. Then we will descend to base camp to cross the lake once more to return to Puerto Gaudal for a typical patagonian barbecue. The next day we will return to Coyhaique to spend the night before returning to Santiago.
